Steps in ISO 14001 certification

ISO ( International organization for standardization ) is a NGO ( Non governmental Organization ) which produces standards such as ISO 9001 QMS - Quality Management system, ISO 14001 EMS - Environmental Management system,  ISO 45001 - OHSMS - Occupational Health and safety Management system, ISO 27001 - ISMS - Information security Management system, ISO 22000 - FSMS - Food safety Management System. But an ISO certification is not awarded by the ISO directly an accredited certification body involves in the certification body. There are 4 stages of acquiring an ISO 14001 certificate.

1) Gap analysis : It is the process where the organization's scope and its activities/process is identified with physical boundaries. The gaps in existing system is identified compared to ISO 14001 and the resources required are clearly defined

2) Training : Trained employees make the ISO 14001 process much easier. An Foundation course / Internal auditor course shall help the employees understand the process

3) Implementation : The identified gaps in the gap analysis and the documentation is fulfilled and the organization employees starts adhered the new system defined. It also involves in conducting an Internal audit and an MRM ( Management review meeting )

4) Certification : When an organization decides to get the ISO certification, the application to the ISO certification body is sent and the certification body approaches the organization with desired date on a two stage audit

1) Stage 1 audit (Readiness audit) - The stage 1 audit involves in verifying the gaps of the Management system requirement from what is implemented.

2) Stage 2 audit (Effectiveness audit) - The stage 2 audit involves in verifying the effectiveness of the implemented Management system

After the stage 2 certification audit the organization is supposed to effectively close the Non conformities by proper corrective action taken and the ISO certificate is released by the ISO certification body.

The organization which involves in effective management of its environmental impacts will be contributing less negative impacts. The aspect and impact study helps the organization to prioritize the environmental threats by quantifying the each impacts created by the aspects of activity in each process.
